this afternoon in melbourne, australia we had 34 degrees celcius.
in 15 minutes they say it dropped by 15 degrees. (a change of 27 fahrenheit in 15 mins)

quite a change.

it happens when the hot dry air coming down from central australia is replaced by a great big slop of cold air coming from antarctica and it's oceans.
adelaide and perth can be fast changing for the same reason

i imagine there are more radical environments ... where when?

Howdy Flex ... this is right up my proverbial alley.

Take a look at some of these stats"

also...Chinooks—Warm West Winds
The Chinook phenomenon results from the movement of high and low pressure systems over the Rocky Mountains. As the wind moves over and through the mountains, the moisture in the air condenses but, as it moves downhill, the cold air above presses down upon it. This results in adiabatic compression, the result of which is an increase in temperature.

The change can be dramatic. On Jan. 11, 1983, the temperature in Calgary rose 30C, from –17C to 13C, in 4 hours, and on February 7, 1964, the temperature rose 28C or 51F and the humidity dropped by 43 percent.

The most dramatic example of the Chinook winds occurred on January 15, 1972 in Loma, Montana.

The temperature rose from -47C or -54F to 9C or 49F ... a rise of over 100 dregrees, the greatest temperature change ever recorded during a 24 hour period.

Spearfish South Dakota holds the world record for the fastest temperature change, which ocurred on January 23, 1943. On that day, the weather station recorded a jump from -4F or -20C to 45F or 7C in two minutes. An hour and a half later, the same weather station measured a decrease from 54F or 12C to -4F or -20C in only 27 minutes.

Hard to imagine a jump of 49 degrees followed by a drop 58 degrees over a span or 2 hours.

how do Chinook winds work? ....

Last month we got a difference of 40 degrees Celsius between the coldest night and the warmest day in one month up here. At night a freezing -20, at day +20. They said it was a record.
