Dr. Fauci is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

So he is a federal employee. How he became director must certainly have had some kind of politics involved, even if it's only the kind that scientific researchers know about.

This is perhaps unfair to mention, but I remember when (circa 1980, when I was 20) Charles Ortleb of the New York Native was accusing Dr. Fauci of either helping to splice together the HIV virus, or ignoring the crisis because it only affected gay men and black people.

Even if either were true, I do think he did much better job at trying to advise us through the Covid crisis than left-fielders like the radiologist Scott Atlas.

As an aside, if a reasonable person instead of Trump were POTUS at the time, I think the feds should have started with advice and recommendations instead of mandates from the CDC (or Trump's advice to just ignore it until it blew over).

This is not just a Taoist idea. Better to give free people reliable and verifiable information with some guidance and recommendations and hope they make the right choices instead of telling everyone what they should do.

Of course one valid conservative POV could be that people are inherently wily and wayward, and therefore their freedom must be curtailed with threats and consequences!
