Give us your Ultimate vision of governance -- be it a committee, an elected government, a Monarch or a Dictator that you think WILL win out and be in power in YOUR land in 50 years.
Then tell us what you would LIKE to see as the form of governance.
Ask youself "what if all that I care about happens for me? what form of governance will be there that made it happen."
I will wait to see some of your ideas. I have a pretty good vision of what I WANT TO HAPPEN and some ideas of what WILL HAPPEN.
One suggestion would be to just use this thread as a "fire starter" and should you decide to get into a strong debate, open a thread called "ANIMAL WORSHIP VS. TREE WORSHIP" for example.
just kidding.
Anyway, I will be interested in your vision of what governance (if any) you envision as BEST serving our humble race of chimp-like beings.
Mike
WANT TO HAPPEN-
A more enlightened governance..
Social democracy with a completly transparent government, political parties that are funded by the state (no corporate funding) and all finances are accountable.
Intelligent debate on media accessable to all concerning important issues and the people get to vote on issues often (over internet or other) (penalty if you do not vote, this at least forces you to vote and you will most likely look into the issue at hand)
Another problem with current governments is the short term thinking they exibit, I haven't thought of a way to get around this other than allowing certain parties so pass on policies voted on by the people to the next party, tho how would this work in practice is debatable..
WHAT I THINK WILL HAPPEN
Recent trends show the western governments to be heading more towards police states with corporations secertly controling government policy.. People will be tracked everywhere they go (cameras with face recognition + number place recognition).
Governments will still run on the principle of democracy but it will just become a rigged race with the winner decided beforehand and the parties all taking part in the dance, big money deciding the real winner beforehand and media swaying the polulace in the right direction.
Not sure if there will be continual war a la orwells 1984 but fear will be sold to the people and the government also sold as the protector.
Rich will get richer, poor poorer.
I don't think any one system is better than any other. The factors that really matter are the people in government, the state of world affairs at that time and thus the effect that government has on it's own people and the world stage.
What I'd like to see happen is more people with moral fibre in positions of governance and a good deal more tolerance, regardless of the type of government.
I'd like to see the right to vote become a privilege instead of a right. I feel that too many uninformed (misinformed?) and unintelligent people cast their vote for the wrong reasons or due to media propaganda which usually results in election campaigns based on fear-and-smear and not around sensible and relevant issues.
Each member of society should be able to have an adequate understanding of current affiars, the state of the nation itself and an idea of how the country is actually run before they have the ability to vote.
Call it rudimentary fascism if you wish. I'm just sick of being surrounded by propaganda and letting uninformed people have their say.

couldn't afford it would lose their right to vote.

I rather like the tone of this thread. You people are putting a bit of effort into your thoughts about the future. If... we all pay attention to our prospects in the future, we have a much better chance of not becoming a Winston Smith.
Anyway... good job and keep the posts coming. I'll wait til later to make my contribution, and I think it will surprise you. Let's just say that I think that people are a whole lot smarter than the chimps in charge give them credit for being.
Thanks for an excellent start to a good thread.
