When I went to uni, their was quite a lot of work being done on human pig transplants. They bred mice with human immune systems for tests by the same method, they were £100 each apparently.
I've tried to look up the research and it seems to go back to 1999 at least, here's 2 links the first from 2002;

The problem, we were told, was they have their own viruses and it could be very serious if one crossed the species barrier, like 28 days later. - In their favour, they could render many currently terminal diseases history. Provide spare organs where there's short supply even a morbid black market. This technology is possible now, just lack of discussion, laws, viruses(?) hold it back.
But are there some diseases we shouldn't cure? What do you think is stopping such operations?
Could pig transplants go to far?
I shouldn't poke fun at a serious issue, just this site is light hearted I think...
But seriously you can as of 14 years ago grow viable replacement organs. That is a big breakthrough that's not being used.
But it could go bionic once you've had one organ replaced... this is not sci-fi its quite real, most lab animals have human immune systems these days...
I'm deeply unimpressed with you lot for not taking an interest in this - yes chess players must have all the answers!
In the UK you have disease x charity fun runs every month - it is a profound waste of time doing them but ignoring work that can cure these diseases as of 10 years ago ...
This is in the debates forum because the science is getting on for being 15 years old but no one has picked it up... it bugs me people have to get on the transplant waiting list or a dialysis machine before realising the problem ...
sulks... posts thread on another site ... 😞
