1. Because God chose earth to be the place where we can decide whether we want to go to Heaven or not. If he had put all of us in Heaven from the beginning then it would not be out of our own free will that we end up there. (Imagine if there were a bunch of people in Heaven that didn't want to be there). So basically Heaven is more than a place, it has more to do with the people, eg. a family are more the people than the place. It is like an identity. I would define "Heaven" as being a decision and a commitment done here on earth that starts on earth and is culminated after death.
2. The concept of the "free will" is rather an earthly concept. It has to do with whether you want to go to Heaven or not. In Heaven you would have a more of a "will" than a "free will" because then you would have already decided to be there and lived in a way that has earned you the privelage to be there.

As for those who believe in the Islamic concept of "Heaven" with 50 virgins, I'm afraid they are going to get a very mean shock when they enter eternity...

Well, that was what I was going to write, but then decided that sarcasm better fits my mood than complimenting:
But I can't think of anything sarcastic to say...
Move along people, nothing to see here!

If there's supposed to be some sexual appeal about there being virgins in heaven then there wouldn't be many virgins left by the time you got there and the ones that were left might not be as attractive as you hoped. Also, if the virgins in heaven ended up getting pregnant and having babies, where would the souls of the babies come from ?

From my wordly travels and experiences with other religious groups "the concept of love and forgiveness" is not unique to Christianity.
Religion is a means of controlling the populous, period. Christianity has the added bonus of an "opt out clause" in every argument.
