Is it just me or has the debates forum died a horrible death lately?
It may just be that talk of recession/depression is, dare I say it, depressing the carp out of everyone but is there a deeper malaise?? Have we finally run out of anything interesting to say?
You know the Claytons debate: or for you non Australians the debate you have while you are waiting to have a debate. In this case waiting for Hillary to decide to exit gracefully or not.

when has it ever been interesting? 😀
whenever an interesting thread is made, people troll it, flame it, or in the best case scenario simply babble off topic.
the most interesting phase in a thread's life is it's childhood(fewer than 40 posts). then you know how it is going to die: if it's boring or if it's made by dsr it will die as a child never reaching 20 posts. if it's not, it can die in numerous ways, but mostly when people have run out of insults or simply moved on to greener pastures.

Originally posted by Rajk999Being more busy mostly. I'd hate to say 'back in the day' but I suppose you could put it down to the fact of the roll call of posters having slowly changed over the past few years aren't the same mix that used to fire up debates in the way that I liked to respond to. For my two cents, when the wowsers got the rec count canned and forced a ban on unlimited recs it started to take the fun out of it. I don't need a parent in an online forum to tell me who or what I should recommend.

At the end of the day it gave other people especially newbies, an idea of the relative support a particular poster was getting across the site. When I first started it was great to read someone with a couple of thousand recs. It not only told you that they represented a well received view, it also gave you the newbie a point of reference. It also gave you an idea of their output on this site. You have to take your hat off for some people's ability to write reams of quality stuff. An increasing rec count under somebodies name usually meant that they were a solid contributor to the site and the thing it did was add weight to what people said. It was meaningless and yet it recognized the effort some put in to making this forum a very pleasant eccentric diversion from the rest of your day.
All you needed to do was apply your own filters to their style and it was a great insight into how the rest of the world thought about things.
And all the limits and lack of listing hasn't changed the type of post that gets rewarded anyway. Just look at the recommended posts and you'll quickly work that one out.
In a sentence, the forum has become increasingly bland, and without any reward for a clever put down, it only encourages the thoughtless to make increasing numbers of inane responses.

Why do people post on message boards?
I'm here for me. To refine and reinforce my ideas, a short read of almost any thread just convinces me more that the prime evil is force. The initiation of force and threats of force. That those control freaks with all the bright ideas on how I should live my life (some of them spouting bible passages) can just butt out. That the amateur economists who insist behaviour should be modified with taxes, subsidies, price fixings should join voluntary organisations (aka communes) of like minded folk and just leave the rest of us alone. That growing gummint, regulation, buratcracy is exactly the opposite direction to which we should be heading. That we'd all get along much better if some folk just minded their own business.
...and so after a while of visiting RHP debates message board a man just dosen't need much more convincing that he is the true owner of his own life. You basstards can keep your filthy hands off it, and out of my pocket
Originally posted by Rajk999I used to enjoy writing most of them as well. There was a period while I was still finishing my history major, that I did enjoy the occasional turn of purple prose, but having re immersed myself back into the engineering world, I suppose I have cut to the chase more often of late and left the rambling to a new breed of ravers.
Yes ... sorry.
I for one used to enjoy reading most of your posts. Its unfortunate that the Debates forum have degenerated to the point where many with knowledge to share have gone. But thats what evolution is .. i guess.
