I've read that these are increasingly popular in the USA. What are people's opinions on them? Do you live in one? Why? Would you, if you were able? Why? Why not?

What's a gated community? It sounds like a prison.

A gated community is a place where people who are similar (usually sharing a coommon degree of wealth) can huddle behind guarded gates and never have to associate with the riff raff. They are in theory protected from and crime and their kept children safe from lower class persons and molestors. Although, in truth, a child will most likely be assualted by a family member or friend. But, back it provides the illusion of a pretty, safe sane world and the neighbors must abide by certain standards...no pink plastic flamingos on the lawn....

Well, there you have it....my opinion....

It keeps solicitors from knocking on your door, interrupting your meal or whatever. But there is a fair chance (from stories I have heard) that you will have a neighbor who is really persnickety about things like whether you can have pink plastic flamingos in your front yard.

seems safe but secluded, i can understand the concept if your either old or a family . but stepford springs to mind. would it not only breed little hitlers who get on the gruop comunity association.

I like em. My youngest brother makes a living in Phoenix pouring concrete security walls. He is making good money.

Oh... well. There you go. Ok.

I hate them.

Seriously, I really could never live in one. I value the meetings and the car that stops for directions... and the car of strangers that stop in front of the "for sale" signs on the street. I always walk to meet them and introduce myself. That is what makes a good world. I am glad to say that because of this... my wife has Korean, Japanese, Liberian and Spanish women in her monthly book club that would never have happened otherwise. Acceptance is the key to a better world.
