The standard of living of someone out of a job isn't improved by "cheaper goods" produced more cheaply because the producer can pay his workers less because they are in a repressive society. There's many very logical reasons not to follow policies which lead to mass unemployment of your own workers - crime, social unrest, economic instability - to name a few. And an advanced country cannot improve itself by reducing worker wages as you seem to advocate.
Creating artificial barriers which make everything more everything more expensive create even greater negative effects. Everyone's standard of living improves when goods are cheaper. There is no logical reason to not take advantage of cheaper goods and innovations merely because they are made in other countries.

Surely you are not suggesting the government should somehow force Jeffrey Immelt to work for Boeing and not for GE?

I'm sure the millions who have lost their jobs or been forced to accept far lower wages because of "free trade" with countries who's internal repressive policies hold down their own worker's wages appreciate that.
we decided not to use it, because it reacts violently with all organic materials, so much so, their bottles are weighted before refilling... the only way we could have used it here, is to have stored it in an outside bunker...which was impossible, so, now Hynix pulled out of here, and moved to China,, wanna bet they too have bottles of CLF3 inside their FAB, but we will never hear of accidents? WE chose to take the time to pull the quartzware out of the furnace and clean it, where they just ran the gas through saving all kinds of time... risk takers...
can we compete?

Apple meet orange. How many jobs has Australia lost in say the textile industry over the last 20 years?
EDIT: Things aren't as rosy Down Under as you seem to think and "free trade" with China seems to be a culprit: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2011/08/23/2003511413
I never said things are "rosy Down Under", but its high minimum wage and strong trade ties with China provide a counterexample to the assumption that importing lots of goods from China (in fact, Australia imports more per capita from China than the US does!) and not paying ridiculously low wages to workers causes high unemployment per se.
Originally posted by Hugh GlassWell, can you get any of your Republican reps to vote against MFN status for China? Because it was a coalition of Clintonoids and Republicans who accomplished it.
What a joke, The Presidents own man on the economy, moves to help China compete against Boeing,, and he's helping our economy how?? what a joke, not only didn't they pay taxes, move their medical technology to China, now this,, what a traitor....
How has Jeffrey Immelt helped the American people?
Originally posted by FMFwell doh, like I stated it IS a conflict of interest when he is the chairman of the presidents economic council, should he resign that post, I think so..how has he helped Boeing, or anyone else in this country for that matter, show me something?
So why does your OP complain about him not acting in the interests of Boeing, when he is CEO of GE?
He is not acting in the intersts of the AMERICAN people, which I would presume is what he is suppose to be doing as chairman of the economic council,, get it yet?

Lazy Americans workers really suck! If only they got paid a lot less, our economy would be great!
In fact, output per hour has approximately doubled since the 1980's while wages have stayed flat. QQ might think the solution is for people to make even less money, but somehow I doubt that is the path to economic growth.
Originally posted by no1marauderLol, I had a pretty good team of guys on my crew, but.... if the job were a rowing a boat, I had some that really rowed, some pretended to, and a few would be water ski-ing behind..... it's nice when someone else on the team picks up on it, and settles the matter....

One guy was hitting yard sales when I was off on saturdays,,,,, that didn't last long.. I don't know how he figured he'd get away with that, when the gate guard is tracking exit and entry times???
Oh and the guy at US Steel who told me on a swing shift, If you can't get 4 hours of sleep, you're not trying,, plant is closed...
