@earl-of-trumps saidThe article is somewhat sensational, the B52s were almost certainly not carrying atomic weapons, if they were carrying payloads at all. Any aircraft capable of carrying a bomb can carry an atomic weapon, it's just a matter of what it's loaded with. According to the article this was a demonstration, apparently after the Iranians had fired some missiles in the vicinity of a US aircraft carrier group. It looks like a bit of a non-story really.

This is nothing new, in1980 I was a navigator on B-52's, we flew along the coast of Iran during the hostage crisis just to let them know we could bomb the crap out of them if we wanted to. I also flew missions along the border of North Korea when tensions were high . Using the Buff to show national resolve is what the Air Force does and the men in blue deserve credit for being on the tip of the spear. North Korea tried to meacon us in across the border with false navigational signals and directions so they could shoot us down and create an international crisis by playing the victim.

My brother in law is a navigator on the big cargo planes and he has some stories to tell also.
I just worked on avionics on an old plane, the precursor to the B52, the B47.
