I received an email from microsoft today saying The FBI has a message for attackers: It's harder to hide in cyberspace, as a Moroccan teen and 21-year-old Turk were arrested over the Zotob worm.
Why the hell are the FBI hunting virus writers? viruses create loads of jobs and make millions in cash for the software to remove them which in the UK software is taxed heavily which then goes to the government

on top of that i dare say that the companies who produce the anti virus software write and deploy most of the viruses them selves.
yeah i know viruses are pain in the ass and cause a lot of damage but if McAfee or norton, Kaspersky or the two guys that work at Panda 😉 had a device or software that filtered all viruses & worms out they would never release it or it would be straight down the unemployment centre in the morning or a new hobby for the guys at panda.😉 so in a way some good comes from them

thats as stupid as saying "why do they arrest criminals. Without criminals, we wouldn't have need for police officers"

but i think it's a bit over the top hunting them down, and all i was saying is that some good comes out of them and that's stupid thinking all the police do is arrest criminals.

By the same rationale Katrina was good.

Henry Hazltt explains this fallacy in his book "Economics in one Lesson" He tells the story of a young lout who smashes a window, people then reflect on the good that comes from the act i.e. the glazier sells some glass, the chippy installs the window etc but disregard the bad, which out-weighs the good.

Check out the book, Hazlitt states it more succintly....

this is the same rationale:

"Without suffering there would be no compassion."

"Well, tell that to the ones who suffer."--some movie with some singer in it....

Also, the good can never outweigh the bad. "For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction."

Yes, some people get some business, but someone will always have to pay for it.

I agree with what you are trying to say, but Newton's laws are about physics, not economics.

Virus writers are now creating them so that destroy other viruses, so they can exclusively 'own' the host PC. It was reported on the bbc website last week.

Soon you will just have to choose your own virus, pay the maker of it (so they can afford to develop it to keep the other viruses out) and then your PC will be unaffected. Effectively you will have an unwanted programme on your PC to keep other unwanted programmes out.

Funny that's just how AV products work. I don't want to have to buy AV software, I *have* to so I can keep the viruses out.

not true. your other option is to unplug the internet, and remove your floppy and cd-rom drives. I bet then you will never get a virus, unless you write it yourself.

That would render many a home PC almost useless.
