Yesterday a team of international researchers confirmed that human-caused climate change is driving the life-threatening heat waves in the U.S. and Europe. The U.S. has broken more than 2,000 high temperature records in the past month, and it looks like July will be the hottest month on Earth since scientists have kept records.

Another study published yesterday warns that the Atlantic currents that transport warm water from the tropics north are in danger of collapsing as early as 2025 and as late as 2095, with a central estimate of 2050. As Arctic ice melts, the cold water that sinks and pulls the current northward is warming, slowing the mechanism that moves the currents. The collapse of that system would disrupt rain patterns in India, South America, and West Africa, endangering the food supplies for billions of people. It would also raise sea levels on the North American east coast and create storms and colder temperatures in Europe.

On Sunday and Monday, the ocean water off the tip of Florida reached temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 Celsius), the same temperature as an average hot tub. According to the Coral Restoration Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Florida’s Key Largo that works to protect coral reefs, the hot water has created “a severe and urgent crisis,” with mortality up to 100%. The Mediterranean Sea also hit a record high this week, reaching 83.1 degrees Fahrenheit (28.4 Celsius).

An op-ed by David Wallace-Wells in the New York Times today noted that more land burned in Quebec in June than in the previous 20 years combined; across Canada, more than 25 million acres burned. And most of Canada’s fire season is still ahead.

Professor Ian Lowe of Australia’s Griffith University told The Guardian that he recalled reading the 1985 report that identified the link between greenhouse gasses and climate change, and worked to draw public attention to it. “Now all the projected changes are happening,” he said. “I reflect on how much needless environmental damage and human suffering will result from the work of those politicians, business leaders and public figures who have prevented concerted action. History will judge them very harshly.”

Former vice president Mike Pence, who is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, today unveiled his economic proposal. It calls for eliminating the Environmental Protection Agency and the Biden administration’s incentives designed to address climate change.

In that, he is in line with Republican lawmakers. Earlier this month, Mike Magner in Roll Call noted that at least four of the bills released so far by the House Appropriations Committee for 2024 include cutting funding to address climate change that Congress appropriated in the Inflation Reduction Act. Project 2025, which has provided the blueprint for a Trump presidency, says “the Biden Administration’s climate fanaticism will need a whole-of-government unwinding,” and calls for more use of fossil fuels.

The GOP has nothing to do with it. I am a socialist and I don't accept your misinformation.

The summer of 2023 is cooler than usual.

They were supposed to measure air temps, but took ground temps instead. Anything to lie to you. They duped you.

I just wish the most stupid of us would stop trying to guarantee the extinction of all of us.

Why are we still listening to them? Why do they have such a grip on government seats?

I'm thinking that pricing education out of reach of the typical American is finally reaching a tipping point.

You are an ignorant idiot. Perhaps the dumbest of the dumb. You are certainly one of the most gullible people I've ever had the misfortune to interact with. You believe anyone and anything that reflects your own ignorance. You search for websites which confirm your ignorant viewpoint. And you find them. And you post them here, showing us all that you are just another scumbag climate change denier trying to kill us all.

The GOP has everything to do with this. You're not a socialist. And climate change is not misinformation.

"The summer of 2023 is cooler than usual."
This is misinformation. You are outright lying. June in Arizona was indeed cooler than usual, but July is roasting us nearly to death. Records are being broken nearly every day. The western electrical grid is close to collapse from the record heat. At the end of last year, Maricopa County had reported there were 378 heat-associated deaths confirmed for all of 2022. By this spring, that number had grown to 425.

You, as usual, have no idea what you are talking about.

You are projecting your idiocy again. Man will not go extinct from climate change. Less adaptable species have survived global warming. Look up the Pliocene Epoch. All glaciers melted and life thrived. Man also survived the ice age which is harder to survive than global warming by the way.

And don't give us any BS about it climate change happening too fast for life to adapt. Abrupt changes have already happened. Show me all of the extinctions from this event caused by volcanoes:

Three reasons why climate-change deniers are still getting a hearing:

1. people don't want to give up their comfort zones, and hearing that we are causing climate change leads to the obvious conclusion that to stop climate change from spiralling beyond our ability to adapt to it, we have to give up our comfort zones.

2. big business is heavily invested in the status quo, which means: more production, consuming more resources, dumping more waste into the biosphere.

3. politicians, especially at the conservative end of the spectrum, are beholden to big business.

We can adapt to climate change. We have been for millions of years. Look up "obvious" because you don't know what it means.

The US military is the number one polluter. Why do you condone them continuing to emit more CO2 in the atmosphere than any other source? Do you support restricting the common people from CO2 emissions because you want the US military to continue their mass polluting? Explain your crazy logic.

Phranny, I'll try to explain where many conservatives stand on this.
Politicians are famous for using populist cause and raise the taxes through the ROOF. And your democrats are most famous for it.

Ok...? We really aren't wanting to see many species, including ourselves, go extinct

And you say you're a socialist...? That's one more reason I can use telling people to stay away from the left.

I don't think you understand the left.....the real left. Democrats are not leftists. They are another right wing party like yours. I am only agreeing with you about this is because you just happen to be right about GW.

Personally, I think both right wing parties are greedy pigs worthy of little more than contempt. Both major political parties are widening the gap between the rich and poor making this country a corrupt plutocracy and oligarchy.

If you are open minded you will read Karl Marx instead of reading lies about him and his writings. If not you will wallow in ignorance for the rest of your life supporting fascist policies.

And yes, the summer of 2023 is cooler than usual because they took ground temps instead of air temps like they were supposed to. They intentionally picked the wrong data to lie to us all. If you let them get away with it you will have another tax imposed on you. That is what they have planned.

But by shutting down funding, you're doing that exact thing.
