In a recent thread I ended up needing, for my own health, to cut off the conversation and simply walk away. The last two pages are the main bits, read them here...

though the three or four before that are in a similar vein.
My question is, since I see it as incredibly rude to hang up the phone on someone, does the same apply on forums? If there is a case whereby I simply cannot debate with someone without it becoming ridiculous, is it beyond the pale that I should simply stop responding to them?
Is it better to claim you are wrong even if you do not see yourself as so to simply make them go away, losing pride and the argument for the sake of politeness, or should you just give a proverbial shut door in the face and ignore the person?
Further, if it is acceptable, why is it acceptable on the internet and not in other forms of communication?

Originally posted by agrysonI have walked away from more than one thread, especially when staying would mean I'd end up saying the sorts of things that I would prefer not to say generally or that if I say what I really think I'll get a forum ban. Freedom of speech also means freedom FROM speech 😉

Originally posted by agrysonI am notorious for walking out of forum discussions, especially in Spirituality. Usually I still plan to reply, but just don't get around to it or can't get my thoughts into a coherent form within a reasonable amount of time. So the reason is a bit different, but it probably looks the same for others. I do feel it's a bit rude, but I don't have the same expectations of getting a reply or at least an explanation when you leave as I would have in real-time conversations between two people. I think the most important reason for this is that this is not real-time. When I ask someone a question, I have no way of knowing when xe will read it or have time to reply. I am also aware that the person may have forgotten about the thread or have lost interest. If a real-time conversation is interrupted, people often don't continue to talk about the same subject once they are back (something I often find quite irritating); I think the same may happen sometimes in the forums, people just lose interest in a discussion because they got interested in something else.

Another difference between forum discussions and a phone conversation (for example) is that it's a group discussion, so I don't have the same feeling of obligation towards one person. If I drop out of the discussion, it will often be continued by others (very often when I take my time to think about what I want to write, someone else has already written what I meant to write, and I don't reply anymore because it would be redundant).
Edit: There are people who don't leave you much of a choice, be it in real life, phone conversations or internet forums.

Since when do you not hang up the on a person who is disrupting your karma? I cannot believe if some dolt rings you up to peddle the latest horse liniment, you hang on for the full blow! No not I. In fact, I try to add off-colour slurs (just before slamming the phone) to INSURE I will not be forced to hang up on the same bloody fool in future. 😉
In debate or in person, when faced with, not just disagreement, but with near lunacy, (as demonstrated in your example) just turn your back. 😏
