They were common up through the 60's, my school had one, we'd either shoot at a local park or another high school that had an underground range. We had a half dozen .22 rifles kept at the school, nobody thought anything about it.
This was in Los Angeles, mind you, not some backwoods country village.
Can you imagine the noise if someone tried to do that today?

@JJ-Adams

And high-school gun safety classes. I remember. But that was all before the NRA transitioned from being a gun-owner/gun-safety advocate to being the big-money lobbyist for gun manufacturers. (And a money-launderer for the Russians?)

And those .22s were a far cry from AR-15s.

In The 60's, anyone could sign up for, instrument included, music lessons.
Many extracurricular activities have been de-funded.
We both know who is responsible for de-funding school programs.

I spent two weeks carrying around a viola before I decided I had no interest in the thing.

What years were you there? I was born in LA, El Monte to be exact. Lived all over LA, favorite was Venice Beach where I played in an Irish band we called Southwind. Now I just compose tunes on guitar, mandolin and keyboards.
