oppose universal helathcare, state funded education, etc. feel about their hard earned tax dollar being awarded as bonuses to Wall Street fat cats who obvioulsy aren't very good at their jobs.
Is there any other industry where ineptitude is rewarded so generously?

Republicans argue that compitition among companies will bring down healthcare costs. American's have been waiting decades for this to happen, we're still waiting. America has the most privatized healthcare system in the world, and the most expensive. Republican solution...just wait longer!😏

No right wingers I know like their money being given to Wall Street. In addition, none of them like the government being in control of health care either. The objection is based upon past performance. For example, we have Social Security which is nothing more than a ponzi scheme. We have government bail outs that must be passed as soon as possible and with as little accountibility as possible. The list goes on and on yet we have cries from the left for even more government involvement in our lives. Considering the recent insestuous Wall Street/Washington bail outs via the tax payers expense, I find it interesting that the left still turns to government to save them from the evils of corporate health care world. Have they not already been proven to be one in the same? If you ask me, if you turn things over to government the tax payers will be the ones on th short end of the stick once again. Sure, those who are not tax payers will benefit, but just like the tax payers being on the short end of the stick with the bail outs tha tax payers will be the ones suffering as the extremly wealthy and poor will benefit. The quality of health care will be sure to go down for the tax paying majority.

Of course, YOU supported the financial bailout until most House Republicans voted against it. Of course, YOU were one of the people saying that "government bail outs that must be passed as soon as possible and with as little accountability as possible". Of course, YOU were extravagant in your praise of McCain for suspending his campaign ostensibly to deal with the "crisis". Your chutzpah is enormous.

Social Security is not a "ponzi scheme" as a ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment scheme which relies on fooling investors while the funding mechanism of Social Security is well known. There isn't a shred of evidence that the quality of health care goes down in countries which have universal health care; in fact, by standard measures the opposite is surely true.

Don't worry spanky, there is a new sheriff in town so universal health care will pass......that is if the Democrats want it. So if nothing gets done you only have one party to blame now don't we?

At the beginning of the financial crisis, I was torn as to whether the initial bail outs should be passed. The public was in large part against it but the onslaught of media coverage supporting the bail outs was rather daunting and I got caught up in it. All the "experts" said we needed to start the bail outs and there was no time to wait. In addition, Wall Street continued to plumit to add fuel to the fire for support of the bail outs. Looking back, it appears it was nothing more than a loaded gun put to the tax payers head while they say you pay this or else!! In retrospect, it was nothing more than Washington and Wall street extorting money from the tax payers. Why do I say this? It is because government was monitering the build up to the credit crisis and knew full well the problem developing. In addition, those on Wall Street either knew or should have known the trouble they were getting in with toxic assets. However, in large part we are all led to believe it was nothing more than incompetance in both the government and Wall Street that was spurred by a few corrupt souls on Wall Street. Problem is, I don't buy it. However, if its true do we want health care in the hands of these incompetent fools?

As for your bit about social security, I guess ponzi schemes cannot be considered ponzi schemes if it is revealed that you are being stolen from. Interesting point!!

You can't be defrauded if you are fully aware of the conditions of the agreement as Americans are regarding Social Security (a program they overwhelmingly support). See another thread for the refutation of the ridiculous claim that taxing somebody is "theft" or "stealing".

It's good to see that you finally have come around to my point of view on the bailouts though I, of course, was saying what you are from the start.

No matter the morality regarding the matter as to whether it is "stealing" or not, the simple fact is that, like all other ponzi schemes, it is due to fail. My guess is that they will find another way to fund it to keep it going a bit longer.

As for the average Joe, they seem to have a schizophrenic tendency to not like taxes but want Big Brother to take care of them. In effect, they want their cake and eat it too, but as we will soon see and have seen, this is an impossibility. The Republican party has been complicit in this regard. When social security finally fails at some point it will all hit the fan perhaps the average Joe will have learned from this lesson.

In your original question, you mentioned two, health care, and public education.

There has been little to no free market competition in health care for decades.

Medicare and Medicaid are defacto nationalized health care already and account for a huge percentage of total American health care dollars. Another huge chunk is third party payor insurance provided by employers, which until recently was cradle to grave everything paid for.

Those arguing that the American system is broken, are looking past the failures of the current nationalization. This argument is tantamount to loading more passengers onto the Titanic.
