It is true. Israel did it to divide the Palestinians and erode support for the PLO and prevent a Palestinian state. It seems stupid in hindsight, but that is why they said they did it.

It isn't really a secret. It is easy enough to confirm, but the propaganda news networks in the west are not eager to bring it up. It would require explaining and scrutiny as to why they did such a bone headed thing. There are already conspiracy theories about Hamas being controlled by Israel and how Israel wanted it to happen so they can invade Gaza.
