"What happens when you put Bernie Sanders in the second reddest state in the country?
For nearly 80 years straight, working-class West Virginia was a Democratic stronghold — until it took a hard turn to Trump.
We were on the ground with Bernie Sanders to investigate why."
Joe Manchin didn't do them any favors. Now I hear he's coming back. Let's hope he's actually a Republican this time, instead of a Red Democrat.

Like turkeys voting for Xmas. Why would people in such dire poverty vote republican?
Actually, we see it in the Netherlands as well. There’s something about (extreme) conservative politics, which only really benefits the rich, which connects with poor people.
It’s a pity there aren’t many more Bernie Sanders in US politics. Hell, we could use a few of him in Europe at the moment as well.

The appeal of extreme conservatives to very poor working class people has been neatly summed up here many times by average Joe. It’s the dream that if poor people work hard, they too will someday be rich. It’s a lie. The rich people know it’s a lie, and the politicians who propagate it also know it’s a lie. No one ever got rich by working hard. The rich got rich by exploiting other people who work for them. And the rich got rich by borrowing money to build factories in which poor people work. Donald Trump never did a full days work in his life, and neither did Elon Musk. But that’s the American dream. And the poor people who vote radical conservative keep on believing it.
The other half of the Great Lie is that rich people are happier than poor people. They aren't, but neither the rich nor the poor believe it. If either of them did, it would terminate society as we know it. Studies have shown that people do need a certain basic level of material security (cf. Maslow's Hierarchy: food, shelter, safety, and access to medical care), but that past this level (sort of moderate-middle class America or Germany in the 1960s), more wealth does not bring more happiness.
