What would you want to major in?
I ask this because I have two daughters going to College. Both want to become Drs. Will the time and money spent on training, pay off for them? Will they become so strapped with loans, that they will never see daylight?
The same question was asked by many of the 1400 people who lost their jobs when my plant closed. There is re-training available, but what is a good choice? Where would you head, if faced with a career decision right now?
i would go ahead for the MDs, if that's what they want to do. there's a doctor shortage, isn't there? tell them to mind their expenses, tho. and strike a balance between what they want to do and what the market is looking for.
if a lot of tech companies are failing in oregon, i'd look at the trend early and think about moving or changing careers.
maybe set up a homestead. farming and all that. something to get ready for in my golden years.

The most rewarding job is always the one that you love doing. Not only because you'll be happier doing it, but also because you'll be better at it. And it's always better to be a top performer in a mediocre field then a bottom performer in a lucrative field.
That said, clean-tech will be a good place to be for a while, but I'm not sure I'd start from scratch into it now. So I think the previous poster is on target - physics, chemistry, mechanical or chemical engineering are probably good places to be.
