From the BBC:
A member of parliament from an Islamic party which promoted anti-pornography legislation has resigned after being caught watching porn in parliament.
Mr Arifinto of the Islamic Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) was photographed looking at the images on Friday. He said he had inadvertently opened an email link which led him to the images.
Pornography has become one of the testing grounds of conservative Islam's influence over politics in Indonesia.

Are things like this little steps along the way towards loosening the grip of social conservatism in a country like Indonesia?

Originally posted by PalynkaWhile hypocrisy, agendas and social conservatism rooted in religiosity are nothing new here, democracy - and its testing of vying agendas and reputations at the ballot box - is only about 12 years old. So it remains to be seen.

Originally posted by bill718Surely porn is ok, as long as it is created without coercion and doesn't involve people who are unable to give their legally valid consent (e.g. minors) - both in terms of participation and consumption? The issues here are hypocrisy and, perhaps, delusion.

I don't think most people here get the fact that an argument against porn does not equate to a claim that you do not like watching it. If we caught legislators watching child porn, would the laws regarding that be reversed? Yes the legislators should resign, but no, their actions and resignation do not indicate that child porn is a good thing.
We have similar issues here in Africa where women being indecently dressed is frowned upon. Do men turn away and not look? Of course not. But in some cases, women have been beaten up or stripped naked for being indecently dressed. I would imagine that a similar situation applies in the Arab world with the Burqa except I wouldn't expect a lawmaker in favor of covering the face to resign after being seen staring at a beautiful woman.

Do you think the same would have happened if he got caught at home? My guess is no.

Originally posted by FMFIt seems one of two probable options are on the cards. The nation is trending towards secularism and this incident will serve as a further nail in the coffin of overt religious influence, or the incident will serve as a rallying cry for those who have long decried the degenerative effects of western influence and Indonesia readies itself for a giant leap backwards in time to some rose tinted view of former untramelled Islamic glory.
