Indonesia launches women-only train service

By Karishma Vaswani BBC News, Jakarta

Women board a women-only carriage of a commuter train in Jakarta Some women complain that men take advantage of the cramped conditions on the trains

Women-only train carriages have been launched in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in an attempt to prevent sexual harassment on public transport.

The state-run train operator is running two new carriages for its female passengers on one busy commuter route.

The service has been introduced after a series of complaints of sexual harassment from women who travel on Jakarta's trains and buses.

The carriages are easy to spot - with brightly covered pink seats.

It is the afternoon rush hour at one of Jakarta's main railway stations. An announcement is telling passengers how much longer they have to wait.

The trains to the suburbs are always packed, with commuters trying to get from their offices in the city back to their homes.

Female passengers have been complaining that some male commuters are taking advantage.

The state-run rail operator wants to put a stop to sexual harrassment.

For Yanti, a 22-year-old student in Jakarta, the women-only carriages are part, but not all of the solution.

"Sometimes on the train there are men who bump and push into us on purpose, and they take advantage of the cramped conditions on the trains.

"But there must be other ways to stop sexual harassment. We have to try and raise awareness about the issue as well," she says.

The service has been introduced on the busy Jakarta to Bogor route and the train operator says it will launch more women-only carriages if the experiment is effective.[/quote]

This is - or was - a problem in Japanese cities too. Probably still is.

"But there must be other ways to stop sexual harassment."

How can it be done?

Perhaps the men aren't doing anything at all! It's just crowded and these women are so self-centred that they imagine the men are doing something, when, in fact, they're just sardines waiting to get home.

If the trains are so crowded that people are forced to touch each other, then it seems separation might be the best solution.
In some countries the women might stand up for themselves better and enforce better behavior by the way they react to inappropriate behavior, but it does depend on whether they get support when necessary from fellow passengers and the officials too.
Since it is partly a cultural thing, propaganda against inappropriate behavior might be effective.

Speaking as someone who is relentlessly sexually harassed by women every day, all I can say is I have no answers. The train is the only option.

If the trains are so cramped why not lessen congestion by putting more trains on the track.

Then introduce laws for sexual harrassment (if they haven't already done so) with effective enforcement measures, provide education and deterrants such as security and cameras. Whilst it will never stop that type of behaviour it should reduce it to an extent.

If this does not resolve anything then .... name and shame, or put a big poster on the train with a photo of all the harrasers. If they did accidently touch a person, then they may never ride a train again given the punishment or being accused of something they didn't do. Then the number of passengers is reduced again.
