If you look at animals like chimps or dogs, intimidation and backing off are the normal ways to handle conflict. This prevents them from actually having to hurt each other.

Like free speech and the legal system, intimidation is a peaceful way by which many humans prevent violence.

Agree?

Actually, animals try to avoid conflict through bluff and intimidation so they dont hurt themselves not the other as you imply.
When thats not enough they go right into it. Especially chimps.

Exactly. The biggest in town can defeat the first, but what about the second in a row? The third?

It's optimal to show your strength and let the other know that he might slow you down, but he'll never win.

I hope you got the message. 😏

A lot of the chess games I've lost have been due to me trying not to hurt myself.

So is avoiding violence always preferable? The more you back down the closer you move towards slavery. In fact, I think righteousness is not always acheived by avoiding physical violence, rather, it is only achieved by fighting for righteousness itself.

Yep. Sometimes you gotta show that you mean business. Otherwise your intimidation is hollow and won't be respected.
