Invasion of privacy or Safety?
So me and the step son decided to watch the Mission Impossible movie #1
While watching it he said "Is that Emilio Estevez?"
I said..."I'll look it up"
So I typed Emilio on Google and before I could type Estevez it showed... Emilio Estevez Mission Impossible 1996 as the first result.
That is not his big movie so it being the first result only proves smart phones listen to us constantly.
This isn't the first time my phone has been listening to me. I get ads for stuff I talked about.
So is it safe for technology to watch and listen to prevent the bad guys or is it an invasion of privacy?
I'm in the group that thinks it's good for people to be watching and listening.
@noodlesandnuts saidI don’t see how the phone was listening to you.

Were you watching the movie over Netflix or another such like channel?
If so, you’re probably not using a VPN (which blocks the monitoring of your IP address).
And a good many things track the IP address being used. So, google will know your watching a movie and “help” you find what you are looking for.
Nothing inherently wrong with that. Customer service, etc.
However, they keep all that data as well. Which you could consider to be a dossier of sorts. And this is where matters get tricky; especially if the servers are in the US. Such as a good many of Google’s are…
When you go on a website (in the EU) you get asked if you want to accept the privacy settings. Generally, if you don’t a lot of the functions won’t work. So, most people don’t read what it’s all about and click “yes”.
Equally generally, this allows the website to monitor your behaviour and pass that information on to 3rd parties.
In the US, the secret service (I kid you not) is allowed to access and copy all information on US servers. Google “SHREM ii and GDPR compliance” for more details.
And the CIA has the option to pass along said information (read: sell) to whom ever they want…
If the phone was listening to you, you must have used a trigger word for a program like Alexa or soemthing.
@shavixmir
Same wifi on the Smart TV and phones.
I did not know devices scanned each other like that but it makes sense.
@noodlesandnuts saidThey scan the IP address.

@NoodlesAndNuts
I am into amateur radio and on my desktop I looked at an ad for some walkie talkies.
Next thing I know, my CELL PHONE has walkie talkie ads.
That was disturbing. Not that I hate walkie talkies, I AM a ham after all but that sequence shook me up a bit. How did my looking at an ad on my DESKTOP get to my cellphone?
@shavixmir saidMy step son is Bi curious and I've accidentally caught him watching gay porn so our IP address labels all of us as gay?
They scan the IP address.
Not fair, not fair at all.
@noodlesandnuts saidWell, you’ll probably get bi-curious spam. Yeah.

@shavixmir saidAll this,, Shav, including SS copying all our stuff on the internet,,,,,and you have the worst mouth in the universe, and a lot more problems probably than we know bout,...........So it is OK that they pick up on all this. Even ladies may bar listening.

Moral of the story, anyway,,,,,,,Everyone live a clean honest life and you have nothing to worry about.
But if you are scheming with the govt to get money from other people, things such as that, don't use the internet.
@averagejoe1 saidYeah, but no.

There are privacy laws; most certainly in Europe, because you have a right to privacy.
Nobody is allowed to know what I say to my wife on the telephone.
That’s why there has to be cause, even in the US, and judge’s approval to tap information or enter a home, etc.
