Apparently the French have gotten themselves into the middle of a civil war in the Ivory Coast and are attacking the internationally recognized government of the Ivory Coast in retailation for attacks on French troops by government supporters. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6404613/.

Anybody else find this ironic?

Are you telling me they did this without UN approval or a Security Council vote?

That would make a difference? Apparently the Ivory Coast government wants them out now, even if they had previously granted permission (I will look it up to answer your questions). Should foreign troops stay in a country where the government doesn't want them there?

EDIT: See http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/dec2002/ivor-d17.shtml and related articles. Civil war broke out in the Ivory Coast in September, 2002; French troops were deployed before any UN action (ostensibly to protect French nationals); the UN passed a resolution in February, 2003 authorizing the French troops to stay and also to bring in UN peacekeepers. There are 6,000 UN peacekeepers in the IC and they are not involved in fighting with the IC government as the French are.

#1, this sounds like a clear case of imperialistic aggression to me. Chirac is acting much like Hitler it seems. I hope the international community will come to the aid of the Ivory Coast. Regretably, few on the site seem to care about this naked aggression.

Why do you say that? Can you back up this baseless accusation? Or this another one for the chancre's-strokin'-off-with-his-flag-up-his-ass column? 😉

Edit: In case you were wondering why I come to the defense of the French so quickly, you should check out my profile.

"Ouch"....LOL...easy, there, 'Mounty'...did I touch a nerve?...yeah, I guess you could say it's me 'strokin' as usual....well, being 1/8 French, I reckon that entitles me to criticize them...but you are right, I didn't make my comments based on fact-finding, just speculation, as Chirac is the 'self-proclaimed' leader of continental Europe, or so he thinks he is...France has grand designs to counter-weight U.S. power...and, to get back to your reply...I didn't say the French were evil...was it 'Frogs'?....

Hmmm, the world is learning well from G.W Bush, it's only a matter of time we will see pre-emptive invasion across the globe over such trivial things, hey, according to W, it's all justified as "self defense", and he is "leader of the free world". Welcome to WWIII, thank you G.W Bush and you Republican Christian fanatics!

It sounds like they're just going in to evacuate their citizens, and did so after the government launched a "mistaken" air strike that killed some of their people... that seems far more justified than, say, U.S. action in Iraq, following, as it did, the immediate slaying of their citizens, and for a clear limited purpose of stabilizing the situation to protect their citizens. They're avowedly not trying to topple the government, and I see no reason not to take them at their word.

Well, if that is the case, hopefully France can get their citazens the hell outta the Ivory Coast, and then leave and let the Ivory Coast sort out their own mess they caused. That seems like the logical thing to do, although I'm not banking big money that will happen.
