On Friday the Internal Revenue Service announced that increased federal funding under the Inflation Reduction Act and the help of artificial intelligence will enable a new push to go after 1,600 millionaires who owe at least $250,000 and 75 large businesses with assets of about $10 billion apiece that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes.

Kind of confusing. They know who these 1,600 criminals are already. Why can't they just arrest them?

they don't have the manpower. Turns out there are a lot of fun ways to hide your money in a tangled web that would take time and irs agents to figure out. They suspect those 1600 did shady stuff, they have to do some heavy untangling to find actual proof

Much easier to go after some poor schmuck making 40k a year who forgot a receipt for something.

Right, and I am glad they are going after these cheaters. That is their job, if you libs know what a job is. I have paid, they have to pay. In the news lately is a person of note who has not paid on millions. I am sure he will be be forced to pay!!!

No, they'll take it whether you earned it or not. All that matters is that you acquired it.

One wonders what the black box in this AI is actually doing.

Obviously I’m glad they’re thinking of tackling tax evasion on this level, but it sounds like this net could lead to a lot of by-catch. And since that’s easier to swoop down on, will it actually lead to the 1600 paying their dues?

Just like chips are now in everything electric, not just your computer, AI will be used in a multitude of industries. Like many inventions, it is a double edged sword.

My understanding was that they have a list of people who are not paying. So the money is not concealed. Just like other crimes, johnny law can only catch the ones who leave evidence behind. Maybe they're not very good criminals.

I prefer criminals who don't get caught.
