You were there. I wasn't. How was it? Was it absolutely wicked?

Yes. You just committed a war crime on thousands of living sperm.

No.

A sperm alone is incapable of developing into a baby.

An embryo alone is also incapable of developing into a baby.

Although this is supposed to be a humorous thread, it does bring up an important issue. Many Chritsians and others object to embryo research on the grounds that the embryo is capable of becoming a baby. When asked about sperm / eggs, the answer is 'no problem, research on these cells is OK because life has not begun. Life begins at conception, when the cell becomes potentially able to become a baby.'

But Dolly the Sheep has shown that certain somatic diploid cells are capable of becoming a baby, given the right conditions. It follows, then, that Christians and others who object to embryonic stem cell research and other typee of embryo research should also object to research on somatic diploid cells.

Pedantic. You know the meaning was 'a haploid gamete is incapable of becoming a baby.'

I don't have a problem with stem cell research, if they're using cells that are going to waste anyway.

Nor do I. Religious people are being illogical. For example, they want embryo cell research banned on the basis the small group of cells is capable of becoming a baby. OK, would they also then object to just one cell being taken from the mass, the embryo implanted and allowed to become a baby, but the single cell, also capable of becoming a baby, experimented upon and prevented from becoming a baby?
