On Wednesday, while speaking at a Pentagon prayer service Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, called for “overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy,” asking that “wicked souls” be “delivered to the eternal damnation” in the fight against Iran, a Muslim-majority nation.
During a press briefing he encouraged everyone to pray for the success of U.S. troops in the Middle East. “To the American people, please pray for them every day on bended knee with your family, in your schools, in your churches, in the name of Jesus Christ.”
He keeps invoking religion amidst the Iran war, claiming that “God is on our side”, an approach that seems to me to be no different to the ranting of the Ayatollahs.

wasn't Jesus Christ a pacifist?
@Pianoman1 saidIt is a given that some (Not all Iranians) deserve no mercy. It was unfortunate that the citizens of Hiroshima, going about their daily lives, were lost due to the actions of their leaders, who they obeyed as Pearl Harbor was sucker punched.

Same thing here. Hegseth speaks not of unfortunate citizens, but they are caught in a hell of a crossfire, and it must be done, to save the world, to put it bluntly. The ones we are after?? They deserve no mercy. He is right. We have given them many chances to end it all.
I do agree that the religious tone could be toned down, I think God is simply watchiing.
Bur, he WAS at a prayer breakfasr. But, to heck w Hegseth!!
@AverageJoe1 saidIn which religion is mercy a weakness?

I don't think you made it through the third chapter of Genesis.
@wildgrass said? I don’t get your question(?) it might be rhetorical to students of various religions, but I do think you are saying that there is a religion which holds mercy as a weakness? And that you wish to consider the concept of that religion when it comes to weakness or to mercy? Or something like that? To make a discussion on the forum.?🤔

Pope Leo XIV quoting Isaiah 1:15.

The whole thesis of my post was to suggest that America is being very hypocritical in its position in this war.
Iranian Ayatollahs disseminate the Islamic belief that any unbelievers are infidels and should be put to the sword.
Hesgeth disseminates the Christian belief that God is on their side and waging the war against unbelievers is just.
It’s pathetic playground politics. By all means disagree with basic human rights but don’t bring your version of God into it.
@Pianoman1 saidThe ranting of the Ayatollahs wouldn't be “Please pray for them every day on bended knee with your family, in your schools, in your churches, in the name of Jesus Christ.”

It would be more like "Pray to Allah that we kill the infidels or we'll track you down and hang you."
@sh76 saidGuess you missed the praying for "overwhelming violence" thingy.

@Pianoman1 saidI will just respond to your angst in the first post. I get why this makes yu uncomfortable, mixing religion with military,'praying for overwhelming violence', as Marauder says,... using faith language to justify violence.

Can we stipulate that the bible is full of war and praying for peace and for killing, all the stuff?? The Philistines, such as that, the battle of Jericho. So let us not require Hegseth to abstain from commonplace war language. ohh pllease.
This was a religious service context, not some pollicy speech. The saying of traditional wartime prayers is ....traditional, with a few biblical phrases. The bible people had wars and enemies too, you know??
His prayer, which was not policy, is not the same as a govt run by religious leaders.
@Pianoman1
I don't think you know what the word "theocracy" means.
the Middle East Muslim sh.. it. holes are theocracies. The USA is not.

The irony is that the Jews do not believe in the first coming of Christ, let alone the second. So how does that mesh with the Christian Zionism myth? The whole thing is absurd.
