Is the world a better place since the invasion of Iraq? Do you feel safer? Are the people of Iraq any better off? Do you have friends or family serving in Iraq; how will you welcome them well they return from this war declared illegal by the UN???
Sorry, but the war has not been declared illegal by the UN.
I think that Koffi Anan did say the war was illegal. But the bigger question is: who cares what the UN thinks? I do think Iraq is a mess. The question was always whether it was going to be messier to do something than leave it to fester. Seems pretty messy though. Even the freedom fighters are blowing up their own kids. Was it 40 kids killed the other day while collecting sweets from an American jeep. Wonder how that was played on Al Jazeera.
Originally posted by smoochie51I'll tell you how it was played on Al-jasleeza: They probably portrayed the Americans as luring the children into an area where a planned attack on insurgents was to take place, so as to make it look look as if the Americans are to blame for the childrens' deaths...

My brother was reading Al Jazeera online a couple of weeks ago. Israel had just launched some new satellite. The title of the article was "First step to Zionist occupation of the moon". You've gotta give 'em credit for something.
Look at the beheadings. Look at the suicide bombers. Look at the soldiers that are dead. Look at the innocent victims. What do you think? In my opinion this war will NEVER, EVER justify the loss of life. And I hate Bush for what he's done. Absolutely hate him. There were no weapons of mass destruction. There was no link between Al Queda and Iraq except they were both terrorists. The US needs to stay out of everyone else's business. In my view Bush is a murderer.
And don't preach to me about how I'm wrong. Bush is responsible for the death of thousands. I'll never forgive him for that.
🙁

The UN is supposed to be a democratic organisation. The member states nor the Security Council have made a statement saying the Iraq war is illegal. That wouldn't be their job anyway. The only organisation who has the authority to declare the war illegal is the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The fact that the UN Secretary General has stated, more or less I must add, that the Iraq war is illegal is an interesting and important political fact, but it is not an official judiciary fact.
Whether the International Court of justice would indeed declare the war illegal remains to be seen. That is their decision. We can speculate about it, give our opinion, debate it, but that's where it ends.
Originally posted by ivanhoeThe United States wouldn't obey any decision from the International Court of Justice, anyway. The ICJ found the US actions against Nicaragua in violation of international law in the 1980's, but the US withdrew from the case before the decision and stated they would not obey any decision of the court in the case. That's what the US government thinks of international law. No case could go to the ICJ anyway as these cases must be commenced by the government of the country aggrieved and Iraq's present government is a puppet government installed by the US; it wouldn't last a week if US troops weren't maintaining it. I have yet to hear any credible argument that Kofi Annan is wrong; that the US invasion do not violate the UN Charter and traditional international law; Von Ribbentrop and others were hanged at Nuremberg for similar crimes against peace (totally separate from war crimes and crimes against humanity). If there was a true international justice system, GW might be swinging from a rope!!

Originally posted by ivanhoeThe I.C.J. only has jurisdiction over cases to which the U.S. is a party when the U.S. explicitly gives its consent. Since the U.S. will never consent to be tried as to the legality of the war in Iraq, the I.C.J. will never have the jurisdiction necessary to declaim concerning the war's legality. So, it will be impossible for the Iraq war to be officially declared illegal by the appropriate international body. Too bad, really. The U.S. should allow the I.C.J. to have jurisdiction without explicit consent, just as the U.S. should become a party to the I.C.C.

Do you know what Kerry's stance is on recognising the Court's jurisdiction ? I don't think he has any intentions at all to do so.
