In the latest act of that Middle Eastern Farce known as "Say-whatever-the-Jews-want-and-maybe-they-will-stop-kvetching", Netanyahu says Palestinian recognition of Israel as the national state of the Jewish people is crucial for progress in any future negotiations.
The Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, on Monday dismissed the demand to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
“I do not accept it,” Mr. Abbas said in a speech in the West Bank city of Ramallah. “It is not my job to give a description of the state. Name yourself the Hebrew Socialist Republic -- it is none of my business,” he added, according to Reuters.
Amazing -- even the supine Abbas can be pushed too far.

only someone unable to interpret clear political signs would call what is going on a farce.
for you fail to see the utility, politically, in Netanyahu's position.
it is not farce -- it is to support the status quo.
And it does so marvelously, for now the Israeli gov't has decided to erect figurative as well as literal walls in the way of working on a peace deal.
the ball is in the Arab court -- to undermine the religious argument, the Arabs must abandon their own religiously based conditions.
one may be dismayed by Bibi, dislike him, disagree with him.. but do not underestimate him.
