ISIL stands for Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.
Since the goal of the group is to expand it's influence beyond just Iraq and Syria, ISIL is arguably more accurate. They plan to expand into Spain!
Might as well call them the Caliphate.

It's THE Islamic State. It claims ownership and authority over all of the above.
EDIT - Iran is also an Islamic State
