America doesn't elect a candidate based on popular vote, but looking at that measure is still instructive:
Year D R I (in millions)
2024 68 73
2020 81 74
2016 66 63
2012 66 61
2008 69 60
2004 62 59
2000 50 51
1996 47 39 8
So more people are coming out to vote overall - that's good.
But in 2024, 13 million people who voted for Joe Biden did not show up to vote for Kamala Harris. (Trump turnout dropped by only 1 million.)
It wasn't a bad turnout - the usual Democrats all showed up, but that's not enough anymore. The Republicans have changed their ground game.
Most of the additional 11 million people casting R ballots added between 2016 and 2020 showed up again.
The Dems did not. Voila.
@spruce112358 saidThere's probably close to another 10 million votes to count, mostly on the West Coast which will probably be almost 60% for Harris.

Let's wait a week for a final count before doing post mortems based on incomplete data.
@spruce112358 saidBill Clinton once said getting Dems to agree on anything was like herding cats.

Usually the term "hive minded" is an insult but it benefits Republicans who stick together no matter what during elections.
@spruce112358 saidRubbish & Lame excuses. Kamals Harris was not popular with her own people. The polls were wrong. Your estimation of what people wanted was wrong. Admit it.

It still looks like Dems staying home, R's turning out compared to 2020.
@vivify saidHarris underperformed Democratic downballot candidates in every swing State.
Neither was Biden or Hillary, yet they both got more votes than Trump.
It's fair to wonder why.
Despite the vitriol spewed on television about people changing their votes to the republicans, virtually no one in the US changes their vote.
The Rep's won because fewer Dem's showed up to vote this time. So the question is why did they not show up to vote? Simple, they didn't like Harris and/or they thought they didn't need to vote because they were going to win anyway.
It had nothing to do with increased racism, or misogyny. Dem's just didn't show up to vote.
