... that the inventor of specific, marketable, profitable technologies start asking governments to take actions "mitigating the risk of extinction" carried out by said technology.

They are saying their own discoveries in artificial intelligence pose "profound risk to society and humanity".

Maybe we should listen?

Interestingly, these same lads and lasses are currently getting bloody stinking rich off artificial intelligence technologies. Many other professions (medicine and law) have taken it upon themselves to establish and fund governing bodies that police their activities. I wonder why tech doesn't want to do that?

Read it on the beeb as well.
Europe is about to pass a treaty on AI, but that’s mostly about risk analysis and measures to be taken; not about where it actually should stop.

I had to go to a masterclass (what a shockingly exaggerated term for what it was) about ChatGPT (or some sort like).
The interesting part about it, is that it’s a linguistics computer. Basically, it adds points to a word and sub-points to other words used in conjunction with the “mother” word. And that way it computes answers to questions. So:

Shav: “How do you keep the house warm?”
ChatGPT: “close the door.”

But, CharGPT doesn’t know what house, warm, door or close mean. It’s just numbers matched to words.

So, no understanding, yet.
However, even without understanding what actually “is” , add the linguistic numbering system to a wargame interface, for example.

And that’s where the 💩 really hits the fan.

Except humans will be cracking the quantum computer issue, which needs hundreds of thousands of qubits running together and one problem, suppose an AI with human intelligence did find itself with that, it is still a classical computer, not quantum.
And it would have to do the work of thousands of scientists to be able to figure out how to do it too which sounds a bit of a jump too far to me.
I think this thing is a bit overblown but we should put in back doors unknown to potential AI super intelligence. And if we get QC going that could make a back door the AI could never figure out because it is still based on silicon.

I often reiterate my belief that libs will prevail the end.
I am quite sure that my prediction will prove correct, as AI is going to be their ideal weapon to throw the USA into a turmoil, their goal. The goal lto achieve ownership of everything, to spread everything out into equality.
Tell your grandchildren that ole AvJoe was right all along.

They wants ownership of everything… and they want equality…

Really now?

Uhhhhhhhh, shall I send you, a socialist, the def of socialism?
While I have you, ask the deep thinker Sonhouse, if he wants Trump thrown in jail for misdeeds, what about the misdeed of Christopher Wray, FBI Director, with his misdeed.? He is in Contempt of Congress, which demands jail time.
And you.....Trump bad, Wray good? You see how the conflicts (chewing your pillows) of libs make it difficult to banter with you?

I think humanity may be on the brink of another collective loss of innocence, as when scientists split the atom, the military promptly weaponized it to win one war, and the world became very much less safe as a result. I am very much less worried about an economic revolution whereby capitalism morphs into something more humane and less environmentally destructive, than I am about some tiny creature dropping out of the food chain because we have released too many toxins into the biosphere over the last 250 years. Small cause, big effect. If bees go, we go--just to give one example--because bees are primary pollinators. Without pollinators, crops die; without crops, we die. You won't have to worry about 'socialism' vs. capitalism if crops start failing world-wide.

I've perused the list of people who have signed the warning. Here's a link to the actual list:

https://www.safe.ai/statement-on-ai-risk#signatories

It's a who's-who of people who know what they're talking about.

MetalBrain will be along presently to tell us we should ignore this because it's a plot by Bill Gates to implant chips in our brains and control us.

Yeah, I think the idea that the programs spit out answers that work but might not necessarily be answers you were looking for is scary. I'm sure you can tweak those algorithms to get a wide variety of technically correct answers to "how to keep your house warm?"

Until you get to the "burn it down" answer.

Wrong thread.

I'm pretty sure they already did this on utility grids for ransom. Remember the oil pipeline thing that caused gas shortages in Florida? Caused by an AI algorithm. Hundreds of hospitals have been similarly attacked, sometimes coordinated, and all asking for ransoms in bitcoin. It's illegal of course, but getting around that only requires knowing how to shut down the local police department server.

Banking is a different animal. I'm sure it's possible but they have a lot more resources than the local system that monitors levels of toxic chemicals in the water supply.

Yeah, exactly. These are who's-who. They are also incredibly wealthy in part because they created the existential threat.

They're arsonists asking us to fund putting out their fires and all future fires. It's cover your a** for future lawsuits. Even the relatively stupid stuff like "college kid cheats on senior thesis essay with ChatGPT" is causing huge problems in academia, requiring millions of dollars to be invested in combatting cheating using this app. Why isn't ChatGPT paying for all that new infrastructure? It's their demon.

Government can't regulate this. They barely know what the internet is. A regulatory body built by tech to monitor itself makes more sense. Just like the medical board or the american bar association or a university scientific review board accomplishes for other industries. Tech doesn't want to do that because it's too expensive and they like money too much.

So much, they are willing to watch the world burn, then throw up their hands and say "see, we told you what we built would do this. Why didn't you do anything?"

We’ve explained socialism to you a 100 times and you still don’t grasp the fundamentals.

Your brain is where knowledge goes to die.

@AverageJoe1
You perhaps remember the phrase in law, innocent till proven guilty?
Trump has already been proven guilty several times over, so far all civilian crap but don't worry, Jack is on it for criminal charges, so is the Georgia DA.
Don't know why you continue to defend a psychopath like Trump, talk about diminished brain power, he has totally lost it.

And OF COURSE your only defense of someone as absolutely crazy as Trump and the only way you can see to defend him is to attack ANYONE else.
The charge of the day for you, the charge de jure, Wray, I wonder if he is related to Link Wray, anyway, who will it be tomorrow?

Oh wait, you have plenty in reserve, you can always hit up on Hillary, maybe another round on Hunter? How far down that list is Michelle Obama? And Of course, JOE.
