@suzianne saidRight. Tens of thousands of people who have full employment working at McDonalds or Walmart or other sub-$10/hr place qualify for and receive food stamps. This is essentially a salary supplement to said corporation provided by Uncle Sam. Our federal government makes no sense. You have to force companies to pay employees enough to live, otherwise it's a government subsidy for big businesses.
The only substantial safety net in this country is the one for corporations and corporate CEOs.
Raising the minimum wage is one way to address this, but I don't think it's the best way. Cost of living varies wildly across the country. I would rather have the federal government mandating that companies pay their full time employees enough to keep them out of poverty.
Conservatives are trying to make it all about the emotion of job loss. But the current system they created is just a behemoth federal jobs program to all these corporations who fail to pay their employees. It is ridiculous. Those McDonald's jobs are government jobs! Are we ok with that, conservatives?
