"President George W Bush has nominated John Bolton, a scathing critic of the United Nations, as the next US ambassador to the world body. The decision sparked a controversy with Democrats immediately attacking the choice. A Republican Senator also disapproved of the move.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, however, defended the nomination of the 56-year-old conservative. She called Bolton a tough-minded diplomat with a proven track record of effective multilateralism. She maintained that Bolton is "personally committed to the future success of the United Nations".
But Bolton's past could haunt him when the Senate vets his nomination. He had once commented "there's no such thing as the United Nations". If the UN building in New York lost 10 of its 38 stories, it "wouldn't make a bit of difference", he had remarked.
Bolton, currently undersecretary of state for arms control, has also been known for his uncompromising approach vis-a-vis Iran and North Korea and a lack of enthusiasm for some international treaties.
On Monday, Bolton acknowledged his sharp criticism of the UN in the past. But he said his emphasis was always on the criticality of American leadership for a UN that was effective UN and remained true to its original charter."

Please realize that this is a compromise. Those of us who did vote for Bush will accept this nomination. But we don't have to like it.
Our first and real vote involves a B2 Bomber, the UN building and a small battlefield nuke.
Oh well. Can't win them all. Yet. But we will. Some day.
Mike, I'm sure i'll do you a big favor giving you the following link dealing with the thread's subject.

AMERICA'S REACTIONARIES, AFTER decades of sniping at the United Nations, finally declared war yesterday on the 60-year-old institution, launching neocon nabob and anti-diplomat John R. Bolton at the planet's HQ on the East River.
Resistance is futile. The most prominent Democrat to speak out against Bolton in the past four frightening years was Paul Wellstone. But the outspoken liberal senator from Minnesota is dead, and because of Bolton's appointment as U.N. ambassador, the rest of us have an increased chance of joining Wellstone sooner than we want to.
Please recall that Wellstone was a college .......... etc.
