Hello! I'm organising a debate on Kosovo, one year after its independence from Serbia. The debate will be held in English, as a non-native English speaker I am having diffilculties with formulating the topics. Maybe someone would be so kind to see if I haven't made any stupid mistakes 🙂.

Last but not least, if anyone has any other interesting suggestions for topics to adress in the debate which I overlooked, please say so!! Any help is welcome!

- A small introduction to the topic with a timeline from 1999 to present.

- On the 17th of February 2008 Kosovo declares its indepence from Serbia, a good thing? (I need to replace 'a good thing' by something)

- It seems that Kosovo has the same set of challenges as they did since the beginning of their governance –(just to name some) economy, unemployment, insufficiënt energy supplies, organised crime, minorities protection, and mainly, corruption.
What has changed, one year after Kosovo’s proclaimed indepence? (concl. Not much)

- How are international organizations active in Kosovo working towards changing this? / What was the role of…

- Does Kosovo need a revolution? (now it is simply 'stable'😉

- Who are the people / institutions leading Kosovo today (the EU, VN, NATO?), and what can be expected from them now that the former Serbian province is steps away from internationally recognized independence?

- What is the influence of EUlex, de UN mission Unmik, and the KFOR-troops. What is it that they are doing precisely? When will they leave?

- Kosovo has not been recognized by all EU countries (22 out of 27; Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Slovaky) and only by 54 of the 192 UN members. Consequences?

- Was the 'attack' (needs rephrasal) of the NATO in 1999 legitimit?

- Was the claimed independence legal? acc. resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council

- Will Kosovo ever be able to govern itself?

- Will Kosovo ever (be able to) join the European Union?

- What are the chances of Kosovo gaining UN membership? (NB, anecdote: Will there ever be a football match between Kosovo and Serbia? (Kosovo needs to be an UN-member to have its own UEFA and FIFA team) i.e. )

NB. I also need to work on the order of the questions.

Looking forward to hear what you think!

I do not think NATO should have been involved in a civil war. I don't think Milosevic was the horrible person he was made out to be. The news media in the USA made it seem like Nationalism was a bad thing. Abraham Lincoln was a Nationalist and few people condemn him for it in the history books.

I don't think many countries would let a group of people carve out a piece of their country and take it. I am not saying Milosevic was a good person, I'm just saying there are worse leaders than him in the world and nobody does anything about them.

Kosovo should be part of Serbia. I also think that Milosevic was killed in prison before he could stand trial. I think he would have done a fine job of defending himself. That is why.

Does a lot of heroin still go though Kosovo before it is sent to European countries? Whether it is Afghanistan or Kosovo, opiates seem to be involved somehow.
