Al-Qaeda Must Be Denied Terrorist Haven in Somalia, Bush Says
June 7 (Bloomberg) -- Al-Qaeda must be prevented from building a terrorist haven in Somalia, U.S. President George W. Bush said after an Islamist militia, accused of having links to the network, took control of the capital, Mogadishu.
``The first concern, of course, would be to make sure that Somalia does not become an al-Qaeda safe haven,'' Bush said yesterday in Laredo, Texas. Somalia mustn't ``become a place from which terrorists can plot and plan.''
The Union of Islamic Courts said two days ago its militiamen are in control of Mogadishu after defeating forces of the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism, which has accused the Islamists of sheltering al-Qaeda members.
The Islamist militia said it has put an end to factional fighting by warlords trying to control Mogadishu since President Siad Barre was ousted in 1991. The U.S. hasn't confirmed reports that it supports the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism formed by several militia groups.
``When there's instability anywhere in the world, we're concerned,'' Bush said. ``There is instability in Somalia.''
The U.S. is watching ``very carefully'' the developments in Somalia, Bush said. ``We will strategize more when I get back to Washington as to how to respond'' to events in the country, he said without elaborating.
The aim of the Islamic Courts is to give power back to the people and not impose an Islamic state in Somalia based on the Taliban's rule in Afghanistan, the British Broadcasting Corp. cited Sharif Shaikh Ahmed, the leader of the group, as saying.
Plunder, Kidnapping
``They are a popular revolution by the Somali people after 16 years of anarchy and killing, plunder and kidnapping,'' Ahmed said yesterday in an interview with the BBC's Arabic service. ``This body is not a political one.''
The militia denies allegations by the warlords' alliance that it shelters al-Qaeda members from outside Somalia, the BBC said. It said yesterday its forces are moving toward the town of Jowhar, north of Mogadishu, where several warlords fled at the weekend, the BBC reported.
More than 300 people were killed in fighting in the past month in Mogadishu, which had an estimated population of 1.2 million people in 2000. Thousands of people have been displaced from their homes in the city, the United Nations said.
The UN yesterday appealed to the Union of Islamic Courts to start talks with all parties to try to bring stability to the country, according to a statement issued by Francois Lonseny Fall, the special representative for Somalia.
Transitional Government
Somalia, an East African country slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Texas and with a population of almost 9 million, has a transitional government that is working with the UN and the African Union to try to establish a plan for national security.
Fall said he welcomed statements by the transitional authority that it wants to hold talks with the Islamist militia.
The U.S. wants to see Somalia build government institutions and end the factional fighting, Sean McCormack, U.S. State Department spokesman, said on June 5.
An estimated 1.4 million people in Somalia are in ``urgent'' need of aid, including about 400,000 displaced people in 34 sites across the nation, the UN said June 2. The world body is seeking $326 million from international donors this year to support aid projects in the country in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia is just irritating isn't it. I woldn't say bomb it but just tell everyone who wants to stay there to stay everyone else to get out and move to Madagascar. Then build a massive wall around it and ignore it for eternity (www.nof-forum.tk)
To go along with this, stop funding any fraud of a goverment seated in Mogadishu. I wouldn't be suprised if that government doesn't have lots of private accounts in which to direct the last 5 years of international aid.

So if Somalia was bombed, it would be to obtain oil, even although they have no oil. Shows the mentality of the left quite well.
You might start to get a reputation for just spouting off without thinking if you don't and I wouldn't want that to happen to you.
