@Mott-The-Hoople saidWe were on it the last 3 threads. He was nicknamed the "Deporter-In_Chief" for all his tireless work kicking immigrants out of the country. He did a lot to keep the illegal populations down. He supported legislation to reform immigration including decreasing the number of legal migrants allowed in the country. The trade off was legal protections for migrants currently working full time jobs in the country and consensus across party lines was difficult to find.

But that wasn't enough. You needed fascism. You needed a demagogue to verbally magnify the problem. You needed simple answers for complex problems that didn't actually make sense ("BUILD THE WALL" did nothing).
There's a go fund me page raising money for legal fees for a kindergarten age kid who was kidnapped by our government and trafficked across state lines. His senator is on twitter posting about high school hockey and the rest of our government is debating whether or not to give $1.5 trillion to the kidnappers.
