...for saying that cuts in defense spending are on the table.

"The widely held sentiment among Tea Party Patriot members is that every item in the budget, including military spending and foreign aid, must be on the table," said Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots. "The mentality that certain programs are 'off the table' must be taken off the table."

So let's see if, in the new climate of civility, this is an idea no1marauder and I can both stand firmly behind -- since we have both voiced support for such cuts in the past in these forums.

Agreed?

When's the last time Republicans reduced defense spending?

Let's see an actual proposal rather than a bunch of platitudes. Obviously there can be no significant cuts while the US is still occupying Iraq and Afghanistan.

It's like I always said, just pick up an ax and begin swinging at government spending. It matters little what you hit so long as they keep the debt ceiling where it is.....which they won't.

Are you suggesting all government expenditures are equally efficient?

Please propose your one trillion dollars in spending cuts that will go into effect by April so that the debt ceiling doesn't have to be raised.

Thank you.

I'm suggesting that no matter your choice in cuts you will have people screaming that people will be dying in the streets because of spending cuts. It's a no win situation in that regard.

I am curious, what proportion of defense spending goes on Iraq and Afghanistan?
I thought that most US defense spending went on unnecessary things like too many nuclear weapons, fancy planes, research projects etc.
For most countries, defense spending has very little to do with actual needs and more to do with who is making money.

I think the cost of those wars amounts to something like 10-20% of the defense budget -- paid over and above the defense budget itself.

In 2009, the total military budget for the world was over $1.5 trillion of which the US spent 700 billion (including wars), or just under half.
