The Netherlands is, indeed, very safe. If you’re not into dealing drugs, then the chances of any sort of violence is minimal.
There are no areas which are really unsafe. Obviously, in big cities (of which there are 5… and by US standards they’re not even big) the usual rules apply… don’t walk through parks at night on your own, keep your backpack between your legs at trainstations, etc.
But, yeah, it’s a very safe place.
