I have never had marmite. Vegemite is however an essential staple in my country, Australia.

British Marmite cannot be sold in Australia under its own name because there is a New Zealand version of Marmite, also called Marmite. New Zealand Marmite is very different from British Marmite. Sweeter, runnier. British Marmite can be bought in Australia: it's called Our Mate. Well worth trying for the comparison. Saltier, more intense. Without the slightly sour aftertaste of Vegemite.

I've had Marmite once. It's an experience I am keen to forget, but it's still haunting me in my sleep.

It splits the British people down the middle. Accordingly, I have one son who loves it and one who hates it.

Is there a continental equivalent?

Is there an American yeast extract spread?

Did anyone get their hands on one of the 300,000 limited edition Guinness Marmite jars, with yeast taken from the Guinness brewing process?

Maybe in France, they are quite keen on disgusting (as well as delicious) food.

Marmite. Clearly. Only a philistine would continue eating vegemite after his first taste of marmite.
