So much for the "good guy with a gun" idea, which was a bon mot of the NRA's president about 10 years ago.
The NRA was founded in 1871, just nine years after the slaves were legally freed, and six years after everyone had been informed that the former slaves were free.
I don't think it would be unreasonable to think the NRA was formed by a bunch of white guys who understandably feared retaliation and retribution for what they had done.
