Have a look at that video first and then comment on whether or not you think the issue of using the worlds resources this badly may eventually precipitate a natural Apocalypse, or whether it may actually become the line in the sand that will serve as a rallying cry for earth loving, people-before-animals extremists, who will foment revolution against the overfed, over resourced, coronary hardened corpulence that is much of the first world?
Originally posted by kmax87The solution may lie in better pasture management, making much better use of the land and causing less damage to the environment. If farming is done using each animal as part of an ecosystem rather than mass producing. Perhaps the "free market" will respond if the price of land increases to such an extent that people are forced to change their farming practices to be competitive, but that might be after civilization suffers a few major setbacks related to environmental damage.

Originally posted by kmax87I believe we're definitely headed for a crash due to our piss-poor management of resources; the meat and dairy industry will probably have a hand in it...but it's all SO BIG.

Industrial civilization is based on the exploitation of resources (preferably other non-industrialized peoples' resources).
Yes, yes, yes, I benefit from this exploitation. We all do. Please don't start on the "WHAT, DO YOU LIVE IN CAVE?!! YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN!!!" rants. All of us that sit in front of computers inside houses and apartments benefit from the exploitation. I know this.
Industrial civilization (including the mechanized animal production that goes hand in hand with it) is not sustainable without mass destruction. This lifestyle CAN NOT be maintained without extreme and violent exploitation- of the earth, of animals, of people, of everything around us. I'm afraid that people in the "First World" have a stronger identification with their machines and comforts than they do with the natural world and other humans.
When things get REAL tough, see what we fight to save: Will it be other humans, forests, land and animals...or the lifestyle we've grown accustomed to? It's obvious which decision we've made.
It's already happening.
I've come to the point that I fight on principle, because I couldn't live with myself if I didn't do something, but not because I believe I (or anyone else) can stop it at this point.
Enjoy the ride everyone.
