So had she not used the knife to cut something, but nevertheless had it visible would that have been fine? Would she still be in violation of weapons policy had she used one of the school cafeteria's knives to cut the peach? If not then is it all right to shoot someone with one of the school's guns (if they have one) but not if it is one's own?
