Anything worth debating here?
"‘(d) Graphic Label Statements- Not later than 24 months after the date of enactment of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the Secretary shall issue regulations that require color graphics depicting the negative health consequences of smoking to accompany the label statements specified in subsection (a)(1). The Secretary may adjust the type size, text and format of the label statements specified in subsections (a)(2) and (b)(2) as the Secretary determines appropriate so that both the graphics and the accompanying label statements are clear, conspicuous, legible and appear within the specified area.’."

So this does not come as a surprise to those involved.
Originally posted by JS357I am surprised at the new warnings, since the government has a stake in keeping the population down and smoking is such a great population control measure, since tobacco offs about a half million people a year in the US alone.

Look at China. When the tobacco industry was given the little slap on the wrist a few years ago, they just shifted the emphasis to Asia, where smoking is rampant. You don't see the Chinese trying to stop smoking do you?
I think it more than co-incidental in a country with three times the population of the US to freely allow deadly tobacco use. If the statistics hold up in Asia there must be a mil and a half or more lost to tobacco each year, so it is really in the interest of the Chinese government to pass out cigs to every citizen. Save the planet, light up.

This is where Australia will be heading next year.

A public smoking ban came in to place earlier this year in China, to mixed effect. A quick google search (always a good idea before guessing how other countries behave, I'd have thought) will show that the legislation is largely toothless for now, with no real penalties for enfringement and patchy compliance as a consequence, but that seems likely to change in a gradual manner.

If we assume the same rate, then 1 mil in China, 1 mil in India and a half mil in the US, we are up to 2.5 million people dying in those 3 countries alone. What about Indonesia, Brazil, and Europe? Would we be up to 3 million a year?
It still seems to me bizarre they let millions of people die from tobacco but hardly a known death from marijuana and yet you go to jail for marijuana and you are free to ruin your life and the life of your family for the death drug tobacco.
