Is it just me, or does it seem crazy to have a city that is below sea level and with0ut proper defenses against hurricanes of any substantial size?
If any one blames the federal government for this possible second disaster, it should be for allowing it all to happen again. Either make the city safe or let the ocean take it away!!

The Port of New Orleans is one of the busiest ports in America. The city is the home of major shipbuilding facilities, a
naval base, the nation’s Marine reserve headquarters and the world’s first World Trade Center.
• 11 percent of U.S. petroleum
• 19 percent of the country’s reserves of natural gas.
• Louisiana is a primary source of the nation’s crude oil
• Second in production of the nation’s natural gas
• Second in total energy production
• Second largest refiner of petroleum for consumer use as gasoline and plastic
• 25 percent of America’s petrochemicals, including basic chemicals, plastics and fertilizers
• The largest producer of salt in America
• Second-highest mineral producer in the U.S.
In 2004, more than 380,000 jobs in the United States were related to the cargo activity at the Port
of New Orleans’ marine terminals, and these job holders received $16.9 billion in combined
personal income. The marine cargo activity at the port supported $37 billion of output in the
nation, and generated $2.8 billion in tax revenue.

Originally posted by whodeyWhat's crazy is allowing poor people to build in an area that is below sea-level where they can't get insurance except through the federal government.

Originally posted by whodeyWell, in my opinion, it's certainly not the federal government's responsibility. In the past, natural disasters like hurricanes struck the coastal regions and it was no big deal because very few people lived there. Now, tens of millions of people want to live along the coast and they don't want to pay for their own insurance. Why should the rest of us who had sense enough not to live on the coast subsidize their lifestyle?

Anyways, how come I need to pay taxes to support the armies you want so you can invade countries I've never heard of?
And how come I need to pay taxes so the police can defend property I don't think you have any right of having?
See. Tax goes around and comes around. Or so it should.
If you don't like your taxes being spent in New Orleans, go there on holiday. At least you'll enjoy your well spent dollars.
But you probably just don't like that nigga music, do you?

Because it decided to hang its hat on tourism, there was very little industry there and it was eclipsed by both Houston and Miami in terms of trade, shipping and economic activity. The best thing to do is not spend another federal dime on the Big Sleazy.

Originally posted by shavixmirActually, I've been to New Orleans several times. I enjoyed visiting the town because of the fine cuisine and its historical significance (Paul Morphy lived there). However, I would never live there or own property there because of the hurricanes and the crushing poverty and institutional corruption that at the time went all the way up from the local police to the governor's mansion. As mentioned earlier, there aren't many jobs there outside of tourism and those don't pay well at all. Then there's the problem of Mardi Gras and the revelers, pickpockets, prostitutes, pimps and other assorted characters who call the Big Sleazy home. Basically, New Orleans is a town that doesn't work; by that, I mean that the town doesn't function like a normal town. If you doubt that, then look at the response New Orleans had to Hurricanes Katrina and how Houston handled Hurricane Rita.
But you probably just don't like that nigga music, do you?

It would be interesting to know how many federal dollars that have poured into New Orleans have actually gone to defending the inevitable. My guess is slim to none.
Simple enough, right... um New Orleans is important.
Why is it important? It isn't the only location in Lousiana. Just move everything 50 to 100 miles away. People just want their cake and eat it too. New Orleans is important to them because it is New Orleans.
Guess what, New Orleans has basic problems due to location. If you want to live there, the US government should bail you out every time you get flooded out. It is going to happen, you choose to live there. Suffer the consequences.
