New security measures at airports and on planes

So far I've heard that air passengers will no longer be allowed carry ons, will no longer be able to get up from their seats for the last hour of the flight, will have to ask permission to go to the bathroom, and will be subject to millimetre wave imaging scans before boarding. I'm all for security, but I think this seems like a clear case of diminishing returns. Is the airport (or the plane) really the most effective place to be spending security dollars?
