Around the year 1906, a law was written that no Asians were allowed to migrate into New Zealand borders. Any Asian (specifically Chinese) that came into New Zealand must have been the pilot of the ship, the owner of the ship, the owner of the goods on the ship, or a crew member of the ship. During that decade there were less than 100 Asian people in New Zealand.

The main reason behind passing this law was to keep the racial purity of New Zealand (in those exact words).

Nowadays, no country would be able to pass such a law. What were some of the key differences between a society 100 years ago and today's society that allowed such a law to be passed?

This post contains some innaccuracies. Firstly, NZ Law is not written, it is presented to a sitting House of Parliament, comprising the elected ruling party and the opposition(s) and if a majority agrees, it is then passed into legislature, after three readings. Secondly, there was no legislation prohibiting the settlement of "Asians" in NZ in 1906. There was however, a tax levied on those 'immigrants' to such an extent that only the very wealthy could afford it.

I was thinking of the words "passed" and "written" at the same time... looks like "written" came out 😕.

And the tax, of course, was deliberately placed to keep the Chinese out. £100 is worth about what amount, nowadays?
