A ‘Ladies’ Night’ lawsuit sent a family-owned restaurant out of business. It’s more common than you’d think
"But a family-run restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area is shutting down this week because it can’t afford to operate after it settled a “Ladies’ Night” discrimination lawsuit, CNN affiliate KGO reported last week. John Marquez, the chef and owner of Lima Restaurant in Concord, told the outlet that it hasn’t been able to bounce back after settling a lawsuit over a promotion that discounted drinks for women."

@Earl-of-Trumps saidOooh can we sue all those nightclubs that let hot girls in while keeping men out?

Conservatives brought this lawsuit, effectively 'canceling' the family business.
But you think this is good?
@Suzianne saidWTF you mean "conservatives brought the lawsuit"?

How did you come up with that conclusion?
@Earl-of-Trumps saidI am sorry the business went out of business but discounts based on your gender, race, religion, etc. are discrimination. Ladies' night out discounts just perpetuate the idea that women are objects put on Earth to pleasure men.

@Earl-of-Trumps saidWhen I was a kid and we used to go roller skating (roller blades hadn't been invented yet), the marquee had a "ladies only" mode and when is lit up, the boys had to leave the rink.

I thought is was a bit messed up, but I never worried too much about it. More like a "whatever." So we'd stand by the gates and talk for a few minutes while watching the girls skate by. Not a BFD.
It would be nice if people didn't worry so much about this nonsense. Not everything in life needs to be grounds for a damned lawsuit.
@Phranny saidJeez.

Why do you have to worry about the deep-rooted symbolism and look for deeper darker meanings in every trivial gesture?
Do you really think people are that shallow and pliable?
@sh76 saidTaverns used to have “Men only” entrances and “Women and escorts” entrances and each designation had separate rooms. I also remember that the drinks on the men’s side were less expensive. Talk about discrimination eh?😲😁

@Phranny saidNO.
Ladies' night out discounts just perpetuate the idea that women are objects put on Earth to pleasure men.
No, they don't.
It's a harmless "Hey, let's give the ladies a break on drinks and increase the odds there will be an equal number of men and women in a bar so they can get together and maybe be happy or at least get lucky for a night"....
What is your problem with that?
Have you ever "got lucky"?
@Phranny saidWhat about discounts for children and seniors? First 10 customers? 😆

Government exists to protect all our rights equally, but there is no 'right to buy'. Buying is a transaction which requires agreement from both sides. Further, there is no 'right not to be seen as an object put on Earth to pleasure men' so government has no business addressing that subject. 😆
Discrimination is more properly thought of as fraud, e.g. someone advertised that they sell birthday cakes, but when a gay person walked in, they refused to make a cake for them, even one that just said 'Happy Birthday'. Or someone advertised a house for sale but refused to sell it to a black family. The fraud was in the public offer to sell (without specifying side conditions**), and then backing out when the offer was accepted. We all have a right not be subjected to fraud.
But there is no fraud involved in advertising low priced drinks for a segment of the population.
**Of course, someone will say, "then let me advertise, 'Birthday Cakes for Non-Gays only' or 'House for Sale - No Blacks'" And the best answer is that that sort of advertising has been deemed obscene and offensive, and we have a right not to be subjected to it. So no, you cannot discriminate and no, that does NOT violate your rights because you have no right to be obscene running around in public naked OR discriminating against minorities.
A private members-only club, though, can serve whomever they like and there discrimination should be allowed. As long as it is hidden from public view, neither running around naked nor discriminating should be interfered with.
@sh76 saidWhat would you think about special store/restaurant/bar discounts because you are black, or Asian?
Jeez.
Why do you have to worry about the deep-rooted symbolism and look for deeper darker meanings in every trivial gesture?

@Phranny saidthat of course, is one interpretation.

mine is that women are held in high esteem and affection
