Norway have been fined 1,500 euros (£1,295) for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms at the European Beach Handball Championships.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) said it had imposed the fine because of a case of "improper clothing".

Norway's players wore shorts instead of bikini bottoms during a bronze medal match against Spain in Varna, Bulgaria.

Norway's Handball Federation (NHF) had already stated it would pay if their players were fined.

An EHF statement said a disciplinary commission had imposed a fine of "150 euros per player, for a total of 1,500 euros".

It added that Norway had played with shorts that are "not according to the athlete uniform regulations defined in the IHF [International Handball Federation] beach handball rules of the game."

WTF?

Yeah, this is stupid. The men are allowed to wear tank tops if they want, but shorts for women get a fine?

I'm guessing this has to do with marketing for the sport. Perhaps they think people won't be interested in women's handball otherwise. Still idiotic.

This is no different than watching a wet t-shirt contest.

I know I would rather watch women's beach volleyball than the traditional volleyball. Just saying.

I have no problem with that except for when women are required to wear such outfits. If the women choose to dress like that under no pressure, then it's all good.

There was a female volleyball player who once said she'd wear as little clothing as her sport would allow, because she just felt more comfortable that way. The key is that it would be her choice, not the organization's.

If the league did not exist, the team's could not play. These women are not being forced to play.

it's beyond stupid but it could be argued that the organization that gave the fine was concerned having comfortable shorts would be an unfair advantage on the teams still abiding to the sexist and idiotic rule.

I am sure the EHF will promptly do the right thing now that this has been brought to attention and not force the women to play in skimpy bikinis.

If they don't i am sure the excuse they will give will be very funny, in a "is this really happening in the 21st century" kind of way.

well i am glad you admit this is about sexualizing women and not about the sport.

To sad people like you I can only say: there is free porn all over the internet, watch some of it and stop perving on some athletes forced to play in thongs

That's poor reasoning. What every sport required skimpy outfits? Should women who don't want to be objectified just not play sports?

Poor reasoning simply means you do not like it.

In the end money sets the rules.

Yes. That doesn't mean it should.

Being civilized means you live by standards best for humanity and not according to who has the most money or power.

Best for humanity? You mean like guys saying they are girls so they can expose their junk to young girls in female locker rooms?

Changing goalposts, huh? Maybe we should bring up how guns in this country lead to an absurd amount violence, injury, mass shootings and death? No, let's ignore the highest amount of gun deaths in the developed world to focus on rare instances like your scenario.

Stick to the topic or admit you have no point. There's no reason to ever force women to sexually objectify themselves.

I am not changing anything. I am just questioning your beliefs about what is best for society.

What's best for society is minimizing harm and maximizing quality of life.

Forcing women to objectify themselves would be harming society.

Nobody is forcing women to play in this league.

It is unfortunate it is best to force young girls to naked male strangers.
