President Barack Obama says his re-election might help end the political stalemate in Washington, much like “popping a blister.”

In an interview with Time magazine, Obama says he expects Republicans in Congress to work more cooperatively in a second term, since his re-election would no longer be a factor.

Yeah, I think there's some truth to that. From day 1, the Republican leadership has been obsessed with keeping Obama to one term. Once that obsession is over with, I do think at least the moderate wing of the GOP will start thinking once again about actually governing.

Obama went along with the republican policies without a fight.

I'll use the Bush tax cuts for an example. The Bush tax cuts were about to expire. There was no need to pass a bill to stop them from continuing. Some people say that because unemployment benefits would have expired along with them that he had no choice, but I say hogwash!
A separate bill could have been drafted for the unemployment benefits to continue and if the republicans voted it down they would have been hoisted by their own petards and gotten the blame for opposing something they always voted for and still do.

Bills should not be cluttered with other amendments anyway. Some are poison pill amendments and the practice should end. Obama could have used the bully pulpit to criticize that shameful practice and get the public to condemn it and support that agenda. I would have gained a new respect for him if he had, but he decided to let the problem persist.

A second term will change nothing because Obama is just another status quo puppet. Either that or he doesn't know how to lead effectively. Either way he doesn't deserve a second term.

I think he's delusional if he actually thinks that.

Well if he gets elected, the GOP in Congress will be the ones worrying about re-election.

How do you compromise with the devil FMF? He sounds really desperate, but selling your soul is but a small price I suppose. 😛

I don't think so. With the elder statesmen of the Party pressuing for some governing, and if the voters send a clear message, I think a lot of the moderates will jump ship and let the Tea Party sink.

Wow, you guys must love your kool aid.

If Obama gets re-elected it will be because the Republicans put up a candidate with all the charisma of Al Gore.

Really? You think they'll just shrug their shoulders and start agreeing with Obama?

The only way that's going to happen is if Obama basically gives them 110% of what they want. If he gives them 98% then they'll pass things begrudgingly.

I think they are just as likely to stand their ground and simply paint the next Democratic candidate as that much worse than Obama.

Where are the moderates in the Republican party anyway?

What are you saying? It is the GOP who are the extremists.

1. GOP says they are in favor of reducing spending. In fact, they appear to want to actually pass a budget!! 😲 That would mean reducing the size and scope of government. Clearly this his not an option.

2. GOP says that people should not be criminals for not buying health insurance. Once again, their extremism rises to the surface. Disgusting.

3. GOP supports a pro-life agenda. Some even advocate no abortion no matter what. Instead, we must continue the status quo which is abortion no matter the circumstances.

I'm beginning to come to, I need more kool aid!!

In 2010 all the GOP needed was a pulse.

I think the last question is quite pertinent.

It is. The Republican Party has become extreme, and moderation is punished severely reminding me of the old Communist Party purges for heresy. But there has been a bit of a pushback privately, and if the election goes bad for Republicans I think there will be a revolt against the tea party stranglehold.

He's still ahead in the polls. Carter was well behind by now.
