How should we rate Obama's performance as President so far?

It seems he talked of change in the culture of governance in Washington hinting at a new era of bi-partisanship, but has subsequently failed to show any leadership in finding that consensus. After the dream run he has had as the one, who should he blame for the loss in his Presidency's momentum?

you could probably still edit that other thread and change the name to something less duplicative.

like, "who should the Dems run in 2012 against Obama?"

So is the fear of rampant centralized control subordinating citizens rights still unwarranted? Mwuahahahaha!!!

the problem is that the president has almost NO power over what happens in Washington.

President arrives. Kiddies on left and right sides of playground are furiously hurling rocks at each other. Kiddies on left happen to have more rocks at moment. President tells kiddies to be nice. Kiddies ignore president. President tells kiddies about wonderful agenda. Kiddies on left say THEY set agenda and tell president to go away. Kiddies on right laugh. President gives speech. But campaign over so no one listens.

did the kiddies on the left tell the president to "go away" or did they use some other language? 😵

The presidency was designed by the founders to be a rather weak position - the main power being the ability to use the veto pen to check Congress's power.

But everyone seems to think the president is some sort of Legislator-in-Chief who can somehow root out all corruption and force Congress to pass a royal agenda. It doesn't help that both parties' candidates usually run bold fiery campaigns that foster this very illusion.

How come then that candidates bother to use the 'I'll reform Washington' as an election strategy, if ultimately everyone knows its just another hollow soundbite.

Or is it one of these slogans that candidates are simply expected to say, even though most people would actually be shocked if change ever occurred in that neighborhood.?
