Burgeoning numbers of Mexican immigrants prompted President Eisenhower to appoint General Joseph Swing as INS Commissioner. According to Attorney General HErbert Brownell, Eisenhower had a sense of urgency about illegal immigration upon taking office. In a letter to Sentaor William Fulbright, Eisenhower quoated a report in the New York Times that said, "The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican 'wetbacks' to a current rate of more than 1 million cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer exploitation of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal government.

The effort began in California and Arizona in 1954 and coordinated 1,075 Borader Patrol agents, along with state and local police agencies. Tactics employed included going house to house in Mexican American neighborhoods and citizenship checks during standard traffic stops.

Some 750 agents targeted agricultural areas with a goal of 1,000 apprehensions per day. By the end of July, over 50,000 illegal aliens were caught in the two states. An estimated 488,000 illegal aliens are believed to have left voluntarily, for fear of being apprehended. By September, 80,000 had been taken into custody in Texas, and the INS estimated that 500,000 to 700,000 had left Texas of their own accord. TO discourage illecit re-entry, buses and trains tood many deportees deep within Mexican territory before releasing them. Tens of thousands more were deported by two chartered ships; The Emancipation and the Mercurio. The ships ferried them from Port Isabel, Texas, to Veracruz Mexico, more than 500 miles to the south. Some were taken as far as 1,000 miles. Deportation by sea was ended after seven deportees jumped overboard from the Mercurio and drowned, provoking a mutiny that led to a public outcry in Mexico.

Wut?

You do realize that the GOP is about to cave on the issue of illegal immigration, don't you? They will cave on it like they do every other issue they proport to stand for.

Will it help them? I say it won't. In fact, it will only worsen their plight.

Should we learn from history? It appears that Eisenhower only needed to get the ball rolling by hunting these people down. After about 50,000 deportations, they all started to leave on their own accord.

With this administration? You're freaking dreaming bro. Federal agents have been instructed not to enforce the law. Obama is a gangster. He's a pansy, but he's a gangster.

EDIT: But we have this. The leading advocate of ignoring the laws related to illegal immigration is looking at thirty years of hard time.

Contrary to popular belief, I think that liberal pay attention to history. That is why the Arizona iniciative was such a threat to them. They knew that if illegals were hunted down are deported like they were under Eisenhower, illegals would just start self deporting like they did years ago. That would have been a huge blow to their future election endevours.

With the border more secure now that it has been for a long time, I think the time is right for this amnesty approach and that it is a sound policy.

How do you feel about the fact that the US Senator who most agrees with you is facing thirty years in prison for child prostitution?

I don't see how it is in any way relevant to my viewpoint on this immigration issue.

Do you believe there is a correlation between a willingness to disobey one set of laws and a willingness to disobey others?

What are you talking about? If there is to be an amnesty then it will be a legally valid one and won't involve disobeying laws. I support all efforts to eradicate child prostitution but it has nothing to do with an amnesty for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

Is there a correlation between a willingness to ignore immigration laws and a willingness to ignore child prostitution laws?

I have no reason to think so, no. The fact that the Senator is accused of involvement in child prostitution does not mean that supporters of the immigration reform are involved in child prostitution.
